Introduction
The Timberland Company was founded in 1952 by Nathan Swartz and since then it has built its
reputation based on sustainability practices. Their market is the footwear and apparel
industries. Indeed, they were the first to introduce the waterproof boots and shoes and to
implement other revolutionary technologies in thefootwear industry1.
Firstly, to help in having a better understanding of how The Timberland Company implements
sustainability in its decision-making process, one of the criterions I used was Marc J. Epstein’s
nine principles of sustainability performance2. Secondly, I highlighted how leadership
commitment and the processes of setting goals and monitoring sustainability performance
were/arecrucial to Timberland’s success.
The Timberland Company is world widely seen as a sustainability leader, especially in the
industry it acts. It was already rewarded with prizes for its sustainability performance and
actions and it is in fact a role model company for others. They successfully engaged
