I- Introduction

You’ll read the biography of an important writer of the 17th century. Read the text and complete with the asked informations:



William Shakespeare (1564 – 1616)

“To be or not to be, that’s the question.”

Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, in1564. Very little is known about his life, but by 1592 he was in London working as an actor and a dramatist. Between about 1590 and 1613, Shakespeare wrote at least 37 plays and collaborated on several more. Many of these plays were very successful both at court and in the public playhouses. In 1613, Shakespeare retired from the theatre and returned to Stratford-upon-Avon. He died and was buriedthere in 1616.

a. Looking at the picture and reading the synopses, could you say what is the movie about? Discuss with the class.

b. Now watch the selected scene of the movie “West side Story”, and confirm your answer.



c. Do you know any story (book or movie) related to this one? Which one?

3. Do you like weddings and love stories? Read the short text and do theexercises.



In the past, it was common for people some rules and different costumes when the question was marriage. There were arranged weddings – the most of the time arranged by the parents -, weddings to cover some personal interest or tradition, and many other costumes that were strongly followed. In the major of the time, ladies just could marry with the parents’ permission. Nowadays,this tradition is not seen anymore.




a. What do you think about these pictures? Classify it in arranged marriages and free marriages.

























































b. How are the marriages nowadays? Is there some rule of engagement, or the people are free to choose the partners? Discuss it in pairs.

c.At home, ask you parents or grandparents how was their marriages, if they followed some tradition or costume, how was the marriage prepared and next class, report it to the classmates and teacher.
