B- Today, we are going to talk about Thomas Edison, the genius of the lamp. Thomas Alva Edison was the most prolific inventor in American history. He died exactly 79 years ago, on 18 October 1931.
S- Firstly, I wanted to say that he was a very important scientist. A lot of the things he created, influenced in our new technologies, for example, he registered 1093 patents in several fields including electric lights and telecommunications, sound, film, batteries, etc.. B- His role as an inventor was evident in his both labs in Menio Park and West Orange, New Jersey, as well as in over 300 companies he have created stuff around the world, many of them bearing his name, to manufacture and market their inventions.
S- Well, now I’d like to talk a bit about his personal life. Born in 1847 in Milan, Ohio, he was the youngest of seven children. The mother was a teacher and father, Canadian, was a political exile. He began working in 1859 by selling newspapers and magazines. In 1962 he knew enough of telegraphy in order to get a job as an operator at a local company. In 1868 he was already an independent inventor in Boston. The following year Thomas went to New York where he produced new inventions to telegraph companies. He crossed the Hudson to settle in Newark where he created several companies.
B- Already belonged to the narrow ranks of great inventors, Thomas Edison created the quadruplex telegraph that sent two messages simultaneously in each direction. But it wasn’t enough. Pressured by Western Union to develop a phone that could compete with Graham Bell’s, he created a transmitter in which a button of compressed carbon changed while the resistance was vibrated by the sound of the voice of the user, a principle used in new phones the next century. While working on this phone he discovered a method of recording sounds. Finally, from the end of 1878, he spent 30 months developing his most famous invention, a complete system of electric light
