Ghosts

Robert Pirsig wrote a book called Zen Art of Motorcycle Maintenance . In this passage , the author , his son , Chris , and his friend , Sylvia , stopped their bikes to give it a rest . They are traveling around the United States .

" Do you believe in ghosts ? " Question Chris . " No," I say.
" Why not? "
" Because they are not scientific . They contain no matter and have no energy. According to the laws of science , they do not , except in the minds of the people there . "
" One of the children at the YMCA - YMCA says he believes in ghosts ," the boy answered . " What 's his name ?" Says Sylvia . " Tom White Bear ."
Sylvia and I looked at each other.
" Oh , Indian ! " She says .
"I was thinking about ghosts of Europe ," I say . " What's the difference ? "
