NYPD voids arrest of suspect in stray bullet shooting of 12-year-old boy in Brownsville



Police said the suspect was charged with a handful of crimes, including felony assault, following a lengthy grilling. But the arrest was later voided and the suspect released, the NYPD said in a statement to the press. Levon Gilliam Jr. was hit in the leg with a round shortly after he exited a school bus late Monday afternoon. The gunman had been aiming for three men who had been running past Levon at the time. Brooklyn detectives on Wednesday questioned a young man initially suspected of being the gunman in a stray bullet shooting that wounded an innocent 12-year-old boy, but the person was later released.
The young man was interrogated on Wednesday, and police sources said that witnesses had picked him out of a lineup and that he would be booked on a handful of charges, including a top count of felony assault. But police later voided the arrest and let the young man go. An NYPD official would only say that during the course of the investigation it was learned that the young man was not the shooter. 





The young man's release means police have yet to make an arrest in the daylight gunplay on Monday that left Levon Gilliam Jr. with a gunshot wound to the leg.
Levon had just stepped off a school bus on Lott Ave. near Osborn
St. in Brownsville at about 4:45 p.m. when a gunman chased three men down the street. The targets were sprinting past Levon, a broad-shouldered 7th grader who plays football, when the shooter opened fire. A bullet entered and exited Levon’s left lower thigh, a few inches above his knee.
