Design for Amazon’s Sustainability

2- AMAZON
“Amazonia is an ocean of forests in an ocean of fresh water.” – Avé-Lallemant in Rio Amazonas, 1859

- General Data
The Amazon is the planet’s last great continuous area of tropical forests.

It represents 5% of the Earth’s land area, covering 7.9 million Km².

The Amazon region represents over 60% of the planet’s remaining tropical forests.

Eighty countries possess tropical forests. Brazil possesses 1/3 of the world’s remaining tropical forests.

- Amazon Basin
It represents 1/5 of the water flowing into the ocean from all the rivers in the planet.

The Amazon River has over 7 thousand tributaries and possesses 25 thousand kilometers of navigational routes that are the real “roads” in the Amazon. Many communities and cities are accessible only by water.

It produces 20 billion tons of water vapor a day, regulating humidity and winds in South America and the world’s climate.

- Biological Diversity

The Amazon contains the planet’s greatest depository of biodiversity. It is home to approximately 25% of all the world’s identified plant and animal species.

There are more plant species in one average hectare of the Amazon forest than in all of Europe.

Some diversity numbers:
- 30 thousand known plant species
- 300 catalogued edible fruits
- 1,200 bird species
- 324 mammalian species
- 1,400 fish species
- Scientists believe that only 30% of the species in the Brazilian Amazonia have been identified. There are still many areas that remain untouched by human and have not yet been studied.

3 – PEOPLES OF THE FOREST - Ethnic Diversity
The region is home to 23 million people from diverse ethnic and cultural origins.

3 million people live in communities in the forest.

There are 250 thousand indigenous peoples from 180 different cultures, each with its own language.

The indigenous people retain the ancestral knowledge of the forest and of the techniques they use to
