INTRODUCTION

This Instruction Manual will explain how to capture footage from a DV tape in the CFA Multimedia Studio Cluster. This is done with the use of DV Decks, which are located on allmachines in CFA 323, two machines in 318, and the 321 Sound Room machine. If there are any issues or questions during this process, please consult the CCon on duty.

 SETUP

Before capturing footage, the DV Deck must be set up to the correct format as the tape. The CFA Multimedia Studio supports two formats, Standard Definition NTSC and High Definition 1080i60. While the DVDecks can be set manually to capture in either format, it can also be set to automatically detect the correct setting (useful if you are unsure of the actual format). 1. Turn on the DV Deck by pressing the power button on the left. Turn on the Monitor. 2. Press the Menu button on the DV Deck. You will see a list of options.

3. Navigate using the Arrow buttons to the setting labeled HDV/DV SEL.The setting on the right indicates the current format the Deck is set to:

• HDV: Used for capturing High Definition footage • DV: Used for capturing Standard Definition footage • AUTO: Automatically detects the footage and sets the correct format. 4. Press the EXEC button and select AUTO by navigating to it and pressing EXEC again. 5. Press Menu to exit out of the menu.

Click on Final Cut Pro in the main menu and select Easy Setup.

3. Set the correct format depending on the definition of your tape. • • For High Definition Footage, change the Format: to HDV and the Use: field to HDV – 1080i60. For Standard Definition Footage, change the Format to NTSC and the Use: field to DV-NTSC.

4. Click Setup to continue.

CAPTURING
 FOOTAGE
Once you have set the desired settings, you are ready to capture your footage. Capturing footage is in real-time, which means it will take the same amount of time to capture as it was to shoot the footage. 1. Click on File in the main menu and select Log and Capture. You will see a Log and Capture window with button controls that control the DV Deck. If the tape has the wrong definition setting,Final Cut Pro will prompt “Unable to locate the following external devices.” Click Continue and change the setting following the FINAL

  2. Click on the Capture Settings tab in the Log and Capture window. Click on Scratch Disks.

The Scratch Disk folder iswhere the raw captured files of the tape footage are saved. It is recommended you place your Scratch Disk in the Sandbox folder on your Desktop. The Sandbox is a temporary space that can be used to manipulate large files. It is not part of the 1 GB limit of a user’s AFS space, but content in the Sandbox will be DELETED upon logout. Make sure to save important Sandbox files to an external drive...
