O SUFIXO – ing

O sufixo – ing é, sem dúvida, o sufixo que aparece como derivador de palavras em maior número de categorias gramaticais, isto é, as palavras que terminam em – ing podem ser: SUBSTANTIVO, ADJETIVO, VERBO, PREPOSIÇÃO e até CONJUNÇÃO.

PRIMEIRO CASO
 Substantivos terminados em – ing.
Quando um verbo é substantivado, ou seja, quando desempenha a função de substantivo ele recebe o sufixo –ing.
Exemplos:
Working at night is hard. However, it is productive. Swimming is a healthy activity. Programming is not very easy if you don’t have a good compiler.

SEGUNDO CASO
 Adjetivos terminados em – ing
Quando um verbo antecede um substantivo, desempenhando a função de adjetivo, também recebe o sufixo – ing.
Exemplos:
This is a very interesting book. The operating system is not working now.
The adding machine was developed a long time ago.

TERCEIRO CASO

 Verbos terminados em – ing.

Quando um verbo vem depois de uma preposição (exceto to), sempre recebe –ing. Geralmente, esse verbo é traduzido como infinitivo.
Exemplos:
I’m tired of speaking. Another innovation was the introduction of simpler, “user-friendly” methods for controlling the operations of microcomputers. Before leaving the class, turn off the computers.

QUARTO CASO

 Gerúndio dos verbos
Verbos principais, quando no presente, passado e futuro contínuos, terminam em –ing. É o emprego do gerúndio.
Exemplos:
Thiago was studying Algorithm when I called him.
The students will be taking an admission exam on Sunday. Susan is typing a letter to the editor of a newspaper. She is writing to complain about porn sites in the internet.

OUTRAS
