Oscar Wilde nasceu em 16 de outubro de 1854 em Dublin, Irlanda. Filho de William Robert Wilde, cirurgião-oculista que servia à rainha. Sua mãe, Jane Speranza Francesca Wilde, escrevia versos irlandeses patrióticos com o pseudônimo de Speranza.
Foi educado no Trinity College, Dublin e mais tarde em Oxford. Lá ele recebe a influência de Walter Pater e da doutrina da "arte pela arte". Em 1879, vai para Londres, para estabelecer-se como líder do "movimento estético". Em 1881 é publicada uma coletânea de seus poemas. Em 1882, sem dinheiro, aceita participar de um ano de viagens entre USA e Canadá. Essa viagem lhe rendeu fama e fortuna.
