World Steel Association’s Safety and Health Excellence Recognition 2010

In order to encourage and support the goal of zero: an injury, illness free and healthy workplace, worldsteel sees value in recognising member companies that are actively working to improve Safety and Health within the steel industry. Recognition of excellent practices, accompanied by a document detailing the practices and their results, will encourage collaborative sharing and support worldsteel members in adopting industry-leading practices across the globe.

Safety and Health is often only referred to in a negative light; the number of fatalities in our industry is a common way to measure performance. This recognition provides an opportunity to identify and honour the efforts made by worldsteel members to improve the steel industry, making it a safer, healthier place to work.

Recognition Breakdown
Assessment of the submitted practices will be undertaken by the Safety and Health Committee (SHCO) Chair; the Director General of the World Steel Association; the worldsteel General Manager, Technology & Environment, and the worldsteel Fellow, Safety & Health. The Recognitions will be awarded at the World Steel Association’s annual conference, in Tokyo, October 2010.

The key assessment criteria for the Recognition are as follows:
Living the worldsteel Safety and Health Principles. Does the practice support and demonstrate the worldsteel Safety and Health Principles in the workplace?
Impact on metrics. Has the practice had a positive impact on the safety or health metrics of the organisation? There needs to be clear evidence of fatality / LTI prevention, other company metric improvements (leading or lagging indicator) or show health improvements as a result of the practice.
Application to worldsteel members. Can the practice be applied to a significant majority of worldsteel member organisations?
