Pulpar Reactions Produced by Orthodontic Appliacnces

PULPAR REACTIONS PRODUCED BY ORTHODONTIC APPLIANCES

ABSTRACT

Pulpar reactions that may occur during and after orthodontic treatments were identified and debated in this literature review. The main factors that let the clinician to predict the incidence, location and severity of the pulpar reactions before the orthodontic treatment were also reviewed. The orthodontic treatment may cause pulp alterations independently of the technique used. The patient history, the dental clinical exam, the full mouth radiographs, and others complementary tests (pulp testing, periodontal probing) are vital to prevent and to treat possible dental alterations. Mechanic combinations produced by orthodontic appliances (heavy forces, large orthodontic movements specially intrusive forces or tipping forces, overjet reductions and extraction versus non extraction mechanotherapy) are commonly causes of root damages. It is essential to complete the orthodontic treatment in order to obtain the correct occlusion, to eliminate all occlusal interferences, avoiding, therefore, occlusal traumatism and potential) detrimental to the roots.
