REPRESENTAÇÃO E ESTERIÓTIPOS FOTOGRÁFICOS: A NATIONAL
GEOGRAPHIC COMO VITRINE DO ORIENTE MÉDIO

Resumo
O presente trabalho pretende reflectir sobre a função da imagem fotográfica enquanto documento e janela para a descoberta de um mundo ainda desconhecido e novo, repleto de lugares exóticos e povos de costumes singulares. A partir de conceitos fundamentados na teoria da imagem e do fotojornalismo, será traçada uma análise sobre a fotografia enquanto espelho e representação da realidade, os seus processos de reprodução do real.
Como estudo de caso, e através de uma análise semiótica e simbólica estruturada, será estudada a representação imagética dos povos médio-orientais na revista National
Geographic, editada em Portugal. Alguns conceitos que passam pela antropologia visual serão levantados como base teórica para uma análise empírica das técnicas estéticas e estruturas narrativas da linguagem para-verbal utilizada pela publicação nas imagens referentes as sociedades árabes, muçulmanas e islâmicas.

The present work intends to bring up the reflection upon the function of the photographic image as document and window to a world yet to discover, full of exotic places and people with singular habits. From concepts based on the image theory and photojournalism, it will be traced an analysis about photography as a mirror, representing a reality, and its processes of reproduction of the real. As a case study and thought a structured semiotic and symbolic analysis, it will be studied the imagetic representation of the people of the
Middle East in the Portuguese edition of the National Geographic magazine. Some concepts regarding visual anthropology will be used as theoretical bases to an empirical analysis of esthetic techniques and narrative structures of the non-verbal language showed in the images on that publication referring to Arab, Muslim and Islamic
