ABSTRACT | Introduction: halitosis oral refers specifically to the odor that originates from the oral cavity. It is a problem that affects socially in interpersonal relationships, regardless of etiology. The objective of this paper is to report the results of research on the prevalence of halitosis in patients treated in the period from May to July 2010, the oral health team of the Basic Health Unit Roberto da Silveira, located in the district of Barão de Juparanã, Valença/RJ. Materials and methods: this study is the result of an applied research, observational, quantitative and cross, which reported the prevalence of halitosis in patients treated by oral health teams from the Basic Health Unit Roberto da Silveira, in Barão de Juparanã, Valença / RJ. The odour of the patients was measured in relation to volatile sulfur compounds - CVS and hydrocarbon gases through halimeter Breath
Alert HC-205 (Tanita ®). The results revealed no statistically significant difference between men and women participants.
Conclusion: 59.69% of the participants possessed no odor to the time of physiological measurement, suggesting the need for diagnostic investigations on the prevalence of halitosis in health unit users and one to evaluate the need and feasibility of developing educational activities on the subject.
