I. I NTRODUCTION

EPENDING on the application nature, several types of static power converters are demanded for the adequate conversion and conditioning of the energy provided by primary 26 sources such as photovoltaic arrays, wind turbines, and fuel 27 cells. Moreover, considering that the overall cost of renewable 28 energy systems is high, the use of high efficiency power elec29 tronic converters is a must [1]. 30 Literature presents numerous examples for applications 31 where dc–dc step-up stages are necessary, e.g., photovoltaic 32 systems [2], uninterruptible power supplies (UPSs) [3], fuel cell 33 powered systems [4], and fork-lift vehicles [5], although many 34 other ones can be easily found. Typical solutions include the 35 use of low-frequency or high-frequency power transformers to 36 adjust the voltage gain properly. In addition, galvanic isolation 37 may be necessary due to safety reasons [6]. Unfortunately, 38 this practice may bring increased size, weight, and volume 39 if compared with nonisolated approaches such as the boost 40 converter.
