Resumo: O presente artigo tem o objetivo de tecer uma possibilidade de leitura da narrativa O
Grande Mentecapto (1979), de Fernando Sabino, explicitando as articulações entre o protagonista
Geraldo Viramundo e o pícaro clássico espanhol. Nesse sentido, faz-se um breve levantamento concernente ao contexto histórico-social em que o romance foi lançado. Para análise do texto, toma-se como referencial teórico a Estética da Recepção, ancorada às categorias bakhtinianas de paródia, polifonia, polissemia e intertextualidade. A esse respeito, a proposta de leitura desse estudo engloba a escritura em seus aspectos verticais e horizontais, considerando as relações da narrativa com o universo de Lazarillo de Tormes, Guzmán de Alfarache e Pablos de Segóvia, entre outros.

Abstract: This paper aims at indicating a reading proposal of Fernando Sabino’s O Grande
Mentecapto (1979), expliciting the links between the main character Geraldo Viramundo and the classic Spanish picaro. In this sense, a brief survey concerning the social and historical context in which the novel was launched is made. The Reception Aesthetics with a basis in the Bakhtin’s categories of parody, polyphony, polysemy and intertextuality is used as a reference for the text. In this regard, the reading proposal of this study includes reading the novel in its vertical and horizontal aspects, considering the relationship of the narrative to Lazarillo de Tormes, Guzmán de Alfarache and Pablos de Segovia universe, among others.
