CACHAÇA - (Portuguese pronunciation: [kaʃasɐ]) or "Ca-SHAH-sa"

Cachaça is liquor made from fermented sugarcane juice and is the most popular distilled alcoholic beverage in the country. It is also known as aguardente, pinga, caninha and many other names.
It is regarded internationally as a typically Brazilian product.
There are two types of cachaça: artisanal and industrial.

Cachaça is mostly produced in Brazil, where, according to 2007 IBRAC (Brazilian Institute of Cachaça) figures, the country has 40.000 producers of this drink, 1.5 billion litres (390 million gallons) are consumed annually, compared with 15 million litres (4.0 million gallons) outside the country. It is typically between 38% and 48% alcohol by volume.

However, the 40.000 producers, 99% are micro-enterprises, which mostly use small copper stills in the production of artisanal cachaça. Large companies, which account for the remaining 1%, produce cachaça in large column stills.

These numbers put the Brazilian cachaça among the most consumed distilled beverages in the world, even though the export product represent around only 1% of total production, mostly exported to Germany.

Industry of alcoholic beverages: Overall

In Brazil, drinking is the same and take a time to relax with your friends.

Considering the market of alcoholic beverages as a whole and including fermented beverages such as wines and beers, cachaça (sugar cane liquor) ensures the second position in the ranking of the most consumed beverages in Brazil.

According to data from the Brazilian Association of Beverage (ABRABE), cachaça holds second place (6% of consumption) just behind beer, which guarantees 88% of the consumption in the country.
