Abstract: This research has for objective the redefinition of the limits of the hydrographic basins of the Island of
Maranhão from orbital products. Techniques of remote sensing and GIS had been used for the elaboration and analysis of thematic mappings. The information sources had been topographical letters and altimetric data of the
SRTM project (Shuttle) it had allowed the identification of the altimetric elements of characterization of the relief (curves of level and quoted points). From altimetry, obtains morphometric informations essential in the analysis of hydrographic basins such as: declivity, hypsometry, land profiles, calculation of areas, drainage density, among others. In digital ambient, with the use of Numerical Land Modeling (NLM), this information is obtained with rapidity and precision, making the process of elaboration of morphometric maps significantly more dynamic

1. Introdução
A bacia hidrográfica, dentro de uma visão integrada, deve ser a unidade de caracterização, diagnóstico, planejamento e gestão ambiental, com vistas ao desenvolvimento regional sustentável, pois os impactos ambientais podem ser mensurados e corrigidos mais facilmente.
Assim, a água vem a ser um elemento integrador dos fenômenos físicos.
