ABSTRACT
The use of burned clays, in the metakaolin form, as pozzolanic material for mortars and concretes is having a remarkable attention in the last years. This work has as objective to study the potentialities of a local caulim as partial cement replacement material. Two finess of the caulim were used: #200 and #325, burned at temperatures of 700, 800 and 900oC for a period of 2 hours. The amounts of replacement were 10, 20, 30 and 40%, besides the reference mortar, being the relationship wate/binder ratio constant and equal to 0,4. The pozolanic activity index was determined in mortars with the cement Portland. The effect of partial substitution of cement in mortar was evaluated through compression strength and speed of propagation of ultra-sonic wave. Mortars with kaolin presented superior strength comparing to reference mortar, until the level of 30% of substitution, when burned in the temperatures of 700 and 800oC for both finess. The ultra-sonic speed propagation wave reduces in agreement with the increasing of substitution tax showing that the parcial cement replacement modifies the pore structure of the mortars.
