Abstract. Run overs of wild vertebrates on the 070 Highway, mountain range province of Cáceres, Mato Grosso. In the latest decades several studies have demonstrated the different impacts of the roads (highways) on the community of vertebrates, from the loss and fragmentation of their habitat to their death by run overs. In this study we seek to estimate the number of run overs (hits) during a oneyear period on the 070 highway, taking into account two kinds of landscapes, planted pasture and hedge original vegetation. A total of 211 individuals and 41 species of vertebrates were registered during a one-year period of studies on a 63 km stretch. Among the groups analyzed, the mammals were the ones which were most run over, in number of individuals as well as in number of species, followed by birds, reptiles and amphibious. Among the mammals, three species were found dead in more quantity, Cerdocyon thous, Euphractus sexcinctus and Tamandua tetradactyla, being the first one most found in the hedge areas rather than in pasture ones. The low number of amphibious might have been in reflection of the dry environment of the mountain range area with the presence of few watery bodies (places). The period of higher rates of run overs was during the drought, perhaps influenced by the territory increase due to the scarcity of resources, burnings, etc., but the results were not significant. From the total of vertebrates run over within the hedge areas and pasture ones, only the birds were the
