Abstract
This paper discusses social, political and cultural relations about the memory of the body. It focuses in the Christian tradition. The way of seeing and living the body in the Occident acquires several temporalities coming from the Judaic-Christian culture. It all, most probably, begun in the 'celebrations' that the emerging Christian culture inherits from the biblical-Judaic tradition, in which an image of the body resembling God is presented. Next, this seminal perspective of a resplendent and glorious body in the New
Testament transforms into the deviating economy of 'sin'. Here, gender relations highlights a degraded body, instituting asymmetry and guilt in the Adam and Eve opposing relationship. Furthermore, it supports and feeds the ethical and moral degradation of the body and of the human: these become a 'soul's tomb' and permanent source of spiritual humiliation. All this is true in spite of the uses that the medieval, renaissance and modernist structures of power that are put in practice, smoking even further this complex and multiform memory of the human body.
