RESUMO

ABSTRACT

O tema central do presente estudo é o conflito socioambiental que ocorre na região carbonífera de Santa Catarina. A região de Criciúma, principal pólo produtor do estado localizado na porção sul do mesmo, é uma das áreas de maior produção de carvão mineral do país. Os problemas relacionados às atividades de exploração e processamento desse mineral geram graves impactos, riscos e vulnerabilidade socioambientais na localidade e região. Entre os principais problemas evidenciam-se a poluição hídrica, do ar e do solo e a degradação da fauna e da flora regional. Associadas a essa degradação, observam-se inúmeras doenças que afetam a população local e regional, particularmente a população mais pobre, cuja exposição aos riscos e às vulnerabilidades torna-se mais intensa.

The central theme of the present study is the socioenvironmental conflict that occurs in the carboniferous area of Santa Catarina.
The Criciúma’s region is the principal production pole located in the south region of the State and, at the same time, is one of the larger areas of production of mineral coal in the country. The problems related to the exploration activities and processing of this mineral generate serious impact, socio-environmental risks and vulnerability in the area. Among the principal problems that can be observed are the hydrical processes, air, and soil pollution, and the degradation of the regional fauna and flora.
Associated with this degradation there are some diseases, which have affected the local and regional population, particularly the poorest inhabitants, whose exposure to getting larger and larger risks and vulnerabilities.
