Resumo
Neste artigo analisamos seis romances de Antonio Callado (1917-1997), investigando como são representadas as relações entre arte e vida a partir das personagens intelectuais que atuam nas tramas narrativas. Observamos que Callado problematiza as contradições, as dificuldades e as possibilidades que os intelectuais tem em atrelar o trabalho imaterial à práxis cotidiana. A arte pode ser engajada, interessada, deturpada, epigônica, formalista, desapegada do social, mas nunca neutra, pois sempre responde a propósitos pessoais, políticos ou comunitários.

Abstract
In this paper six novels by the Brazilian writer Antonio Callado (1917-1997) are studied, researching how the relationships between art and life are connected through the characters who represent intellectuals and how they act in the narratives situations. It is observed that Callado shows the contradictions, the possibilities and the difficulties that those characters present when they try to connect the imaterial labor to their social praxis. Art can be political engaged, pragmatic, formalist, alienated, but never neuter because it always addresses to some personal, political or common purposes. Keywords: Art and Life. Art and praxis.
