RESUMO: Primordial no estudo da economia o desenvolvimento econômico foi considerado por muito tempo sinônimo de crescimento econômico. Essa visão implicou em profundas desigualdades devido à incapacidade de agregar, por si só, o aspecto distributivo, como acreditavam alguns teóricos do desenvolvimento econômico. A evolução para uma concepção ampliada do desenvolvimento, agregando diversas dimensões, entre elas a dimensão ambiental, resultou de muitas discussões em nível internacional. Acidentes ambientais, agregados a sofisticados estudos que relacionaram o crescimento contínuo da economia à degradação ambiental, ressaltaram a necessidade de mudança de comportamento. Devido à importância da temática, este artigo enfoca a evolução do conceito de desenvolvimento, desde a visão tradicional de crescimento econômico até a incorporação da sustentabilidade.

ABSTRACT: Paramount in the field of economics, economic development has been long considered synonymous of economic growth. This vision resulted in profound inequalities due to the inability to aggregate by itself, the distributive aspect of economic growth, as some theorists on economic development uses to believe. The conceptual evolution of this term towards an enlarged conception of development, has added several other dimensions to that, including the environmental one and also resulted in many discussions at the international level. Environmental accidents, together with the released of sophisticated studies that linked the continued growth of the economy to environmental degradation, call the attention to the need for behavior changing regarding the development pursuit process.
