The objective of this paper is to analyze the main aspects of the novel Ulysses, by James Joyce, according to the rules formulated by Horace in his Poetics, with the assumption that this represented a break especially with that. For better organization of ideas, sentences from the text “Drama and life”, written by Joyce in 1900, will be used to separate the threads of the novel that have strong opposition from Horace poin of view.
“Shall we put life – real life – on the stage?”
In this sentence, Joyce invites Ulysses readers to watch the inovation in the literature made by him in the early twentieth century: people of high social class being portrayed in low stile and also the opposite. This idea contradicted an important point regarding the verisimilitude rule formulated by Horace, unquestioned by centuries: “segue, ó escritor, a tradição ou imagina caracteres bem apropriados”. The order deals with the characterization according to each literary gender, but the reality portrayed by Joyce could only be seen in comedy, with the low characters speaking in low stile, because the faults and defects are wide open in a way never seen before in a novel. At the same time there are realistic and anti-realistic features movement and objective and subjective time.
