ABSTRACT
The construction sector is one of the oldest activities in the world. Since the medieval times until nowadays the sector has been through a great technological and personal development process. The poor management characteristic of this industry in the other times, was responsible for the lost of thousand of people’s lives caused by working accident. It is of the common knowledge, although, that a occupational health and safety management system, when rightly implanted in the enterprises, improve the working conditions decreasing the accident indexes, contributing, also for the rentability and productivity raise. The object of this work was to know the occupational health and safety management system existing in a construction enterprise in João Pessoa – PB and to campare with the model extolled by the BS 8800.

1. INTRODUÇÃO
É comum considerar-se que, para as empresas que compõem o setor da construção civil, especificamente da construção de edifícios, um programa voltado para a segurança e saúde no trabalho é algo muito complexo e às vezes até impossível de ser implantado. Na maioria das vezes se atribui este raciocínio equivocado a fatores característicos tais como: curto espaço de tempo de execução da obra, diversidade das obras (nunca duas obras apresentam idênticas condições), elevada rotatividade da mão-de-obra, processo produtivo parcelado apresentando
