1. ENGLISH’S STORY
English is, today, the most influent language in the worldbut how did this happen? Why English, and not Portuguese, French, German or any other language? The story of English is a complex one, with a lot of events and changes, and it has your begin in a long time ago.
Everything started with the first traces of human presence in the British Isles before the last Ice Age, when they hadn’t separated from the European continent to form the English Channelyet. The Celts start the whole story of English, in England, with his occupation of the region. Later, with the Roman invasion of the territory, they feel obligated to loose their control over the region, and this fact contributes to a very strong influence of roman habits and costumes in the Celt tribes located in that region of England. These influences were the first ones suffered by thosepeople because after all the period of long invasions by the Roman Empire, they started going through difficulties that made them remove themselves from the British territory that resulted in the Celt people “abandonment” and the subsequent occupation by German people, including Jutes, Angles and Saxons, that became opportunist invaders who destroyed the towns and massacred the Celts who were, then, obligated one more time to change their lifestyles and submit themselves to other people, but this time was even worse because they had to leave their own territory and migrate to another one, loosing a big part of their influence in the formation of English.
The language was, then, originated by the influence of the dialects spoken by the German people that dominated the Britain territory, mainly the Angle and the Saxons. It’s in this period, after the German invasion, that is officially started the “English times” – that correspond to the phases that the English had passed – with the beginning of the first one: the Old English, in 500 until 1100 A.D. There are more two times: The Middle English, that happened between 1100 and 1500 and the Modern English, that happened from the year1500 onward.
The Old English, if compared to the English spoken nowadays it’s almost unrecognizable in all the language fields: grammar, vocabulary, writing and pronounce. If a modern native speaker of English listens to some audio or reads any text in Old English, he will, of course, have a lot of difficulty to understand what is being said or written, and even so, he won’t understandeverything. It can prove how big are the differences between the English in his first presence and the English spoken nowadays, with all the changes acquired with the course of time.
After the first appearing of English in the story with the Old English, there was The Middle English that corresponded to the phase which the language itself suffered a lot of influences French, which ones we can, still beseen in the nowadays’ English (Table 1). It’s noteworthy that one more time, at this moment of English’s story, it showed itself stronger than another language that tried to impose other characteristics on it and prevailed as official language, including in the written form. At the same time, and as a result of all the changes and roles acquired by English, it was starting to appear a national...
