Class Project – Maria Clara Pereira
The companies that I have chosen to the case study were Petrobras and Natura, both Brazilian companies with presence in other coutries though and being models of sustainability on its respective industries.

Petrobras is the biggest company in Brazil, its market value is US$ 164,8 billions. It is the third biggest energy company in the world withpresence in 28 countries, on 5 continents. It operates in the whole oil and gas chain production and also in the biofuels and alternative energy sources production. Despite its core business being directly a threat to the environment the company has been engaged in many initiatives not just to balance all damage that it cause but also to go further than the just “giving back to the planet”approach. It is the only company in Latin America so far that is committed to developing its business according to the Ten Principles of the United Nations´ Global Compact that asks companies to embrace a set of core values in the areas of human rights, labour standards, the environment and anti-corruption as follows:
* Principle 1: Businesses should support and respect the protection ofinternationally proclaimed human rights;
* Principle 2: Make sure that they are not complicit in human rights issues;
* Principle 3: Businesses should uphold the freedom of association and the effective recognitio of the right to collective bargaining;
* Principle 4: The elimination of all forms of forced and compulsory labour;
* Principle 5: The effective abolition of child labour;* Principle 6: The elimination of discrimination in respect of employment and occupation;
* Principle 7: Businesses should support a precautionary approach to environmental challenges;
* Principle 8: Undertake initiatives to promote greater environmental responsability;
* Principle 9: Encourage the development and diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies;
* Principle 10:Businesses should work against corruption in all its forms, including extortion and bribery.
Petrobras is also included on the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) which is the top-ranking international index used as an analysis parameter by socially and environmentally responsible investors.
Then, even with the question that if it is possible exploring and producing oil with the environmentbeing kept in consideration the company has proved that it is. Besides producing, refining and distributing oil within the strictest safety standards, it does a rational water and energy use jointly with the generation of the least possible amounts of effluents, residues and emissions at all of its units so that beyond its commitment to pursuing excellence in its operations being reinforced, theimpact on the environment being reduced. Its focus is on ecoefficiency of operations and products, minimizing adverse impacts inherent to the activities of the industry. It has Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) policies as follows:
* Educate, train and commit employees to HSE issues;
* Stimulate work force to registering and addressing HSE issues and consider their HSE perfomance inthe company´s consequence and recognition programmes;
* By integrating HSE in the corporate strategy, Petrobras confirms that all employees and contractors strive for excellence in the leadership and accountability areas;
* The company activities shall comply with current health, safety and environmental laws;
* New projects shall comply with legislation and adopt the best HSE practicesthroughout their working life;
