Abstract. The mechanical behavior of thick-walled steel vessels used for storing vehicular natural gas is analyzed through elastic finite elements. The analysis consists in a comparison of multi-cylindrical arrangements with the seamless steel mono-cylinder proposed by NBR12790:1995 standard. The aim is to apply the same criteria to analyze both types of steel vessels and to validate multi-cylinder geometrical arrangements. Multi-cylinder tanks are conceived to maximize the useful space in the luggage compartment of automobiles. In the present approach, they consist in a set of multi-cylinder clusters which are designed to have its internal volume close to a similar commercial mono-cylindrical tank.
